Safely Reopening San Diego: Plans, Guidelines and Efforts

As everyone begins to anticipate the reopening of our economy, various companies and organizations are beginning to share how they plan to operate while following social distancing best practices. These plans provide a helpful resource on how to approach your reopening efforts.

City of San Diego

The City recently reopened its Farmers’ Markets using these guidelines and could provide insights for outdoor events.

The Downtown San Diego Partnership provided proposed guidelines for safely reopening businesses across the region.

County of San Diego

The County of San Diego has the following reopening checklists:

San Diego Convention Center

The San Diego Convention Center is compiling with local, state and national health guidelines to ensure the health and safety of future attendees. Here are some steps and practices the Convention Center will continue to offer and implement moving forward.

Hotels

The hotel industry is working on operational and sanitation improvements that are designed to ensure guest and employee safety while providing peace of mind and a positive experience.

  • Wynn Hotels released its 23-page approach looking at everything from guest arrival to cleaning protocols to social distancing efforts for pools, restaurants and even gaming operations.
  • Hilton also released its CleanStay program, which it created in collaboration with the maker of Lysol and the Mayo Clinic. It includes keyless entry, new technologies and the increased frequency of cleanings.
  • Marriott also announced Marriott Global Cleanliness Council, which includes high-level staff from throughout the organization and a number of public health leaders, to help elevate its cleanliness standards in a number of ways including the use of hospital-grade disinfectants and removing furniture from hotels’ lobbies.
  • Hyatt this week announced its Global Care & Cleanliness Commitment to employees and guests as well as an accreditation process by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council at all its properties.
  • The American Hotel & Lodging Association is working on its “Safe Stay” initiative to develop enhanced hotel cleaning practices, social interactions and workplace guidelines for the industry at large.
  • The California Hotel and Lodging Association just released both its guidance and a checklist for reopening.

Airbnb

  • The leading online marketplace for accommodations also announced its new Cleaning Protocol, which it plans to roll out in May. Provisions include the use of personal protective equipment and a CDC-recommended 24-hour wait period before entering a property.

Major Attractions

  • San Diego’s attractions—including SeaWorld, Legoland, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and the USS Midway—have developed a reopening health and safety plan.

Restaurants and Retail

  • The National Restaurant Association has also provided its guidance to eating establishments on how to properly and safely reopen.
  • The National Retail Federation and the Retail Industry Leaders Association have provided recommendations about phasing retail operations and implementing best practices for social distancing.
